Take a bow, Meydan!
Posted on 04 Mar 2010

First there was the Metro, then came the once-in-a-lifetime opening of the Burj Khalifa, and now there is the Meydan Racecourse. Each attests to a spirit of derring-do that Dubai can justifiably claim as its own.

The global spotlight will once again be fixated on the Meydan Racecourse as it hosts this year's Dubai World Cup on March 27. The turf track measures 2,400 metres, while the new 1,750 metre all-weather track comes with another novelty — both the start and finish lines of the last two high-profile races of the season are now directly in front of the Grandstand.

The Grandstand is appealing not only in size and design, but comes with additional flair. The 78 corporate suites are generously appointed with catering facilities and screens to follow the action on the track.

The Bubble Lounge, which can hold a couple of thousand visitors, has a 360-degree view of the racing action and of Dubai's skyline. Stepping outside, a large terrace will surely attract many people. Those who prefer to cool down can hop into the Infinity pool and watch the races from its edge. The world's largest LED panel brings the horses closer.

The restaurant is another vantage point. Watch the horses emerge from the tunnel under the hotel into the parade ring. For some additional entertainment away from the actual action on the course, there is an IMAX cinema, gallery and museum.

It all evolves around the star of this development, the horse. Keep your eyes focused to discover little design quirks all over the Grandstand that make a connection with this magnificent animal.

Getting there is easy through an improved road network and ample parking with 8,000 spaces offered by the Falcon Car Park. There is another public car park holding 5,000 plus vehicles.

The Meydan Hotel, for now managed by the Jumeirah Group, is striking in design. The 290-rooms are equally attractive. For one, 95 per cent have a direct view over the racecourse.

Get ready for the live performances on March 4th — horses during the day and music at night!
